So I had a demo version of jaws 14 on my computer. Got rid of it yesterday. That flexible web feature seemed awfully confusing to me. I wasn't clear on what it would erliminate on a web page like image maps and graphics. Anybody else find jaws 14 not that helpful on web pages?
I don't care for flexible web, as I have no reasons to use it. It came too late, and I've learned how to manage without it. Plus, it doesn't work with Google Chrome, rendering the feature useless.
It doesn't do exactly as you thought. Go to freedoms website and read about the feature. That might help.
You can skip things on pages you use all the time so that when you get on it the page is set like you want it.
Other features as well. Maybe you use MSN all the time and you just want to get directly to the news section.
On the Zone, you just want all the stuff above skipped and you land on the quick notes.
It require much explaining and they have it laid out nicely for you.
Wayne, I understand what you mean. But there is no use for it, as I've learned how to battle with a web page to find what I am looking for. The feature should have came around when I was six, not sixteen.
I agree, but if you must?
I personally don't use any of the web features either.
All I kept seeing was a bunch of numbers no features to skip. I did only have the demo version. I guess I wanted it to be cut and dried like saying words such as graphics or image maps. Then I would know what I was skipping. Somebody just e mailed me and said 14 was upgraded recently.
The demo version works exactly like the full one.
jaws has been upgraded recently. I believe it was just last week.
ok so you are looking for a feature that jaws wont say graphic, or immage map link? but you still wanna know its a link, right? is that what you are asking?
Absolutely. Even in the podcast it was said there was technical jargon which has to be expected. I thought it would say g for graphics l for links and im for image map. Then, you could eliminate what you need. I'll look at the upgraded demo and instead of talking on here, maybe should talk to FS and say I am a senior citizen looking for an easier way to customize web pages.
i was just about to ask, ok so if you eliminate jaws saying graphic or image map link, how wil you know what kinda link you are clicking on? or does that not matter to you. surely you'd need to know its a link of some type, so you know how to interact on the page.
Good point. I see what you mean. But the numbers it says mean nothing at all to me. One friend said just get on the page you want to customize and poke around for a while; the meaning will clear up. And the person who said this is a programmer. I can tell I need to work on this one.
you probably have jaws set to show all graphical links.
since not all of the links have labels, it might say numbers for some of them.
do you know how to change this behavior?
Graphics that I hear are labeled. That's what it says in the settings center when I set up 13; checked the box that says labeled graphics. Would the demo show the same thing? FS told me the demos aren't as good as the real thing. I notice that in reading sometimes; the demo loses it's focus in reading. Will uninstall this 14 and install the upgrade probably in a few days in the demo on the web site for FS.
first, the demmo is the real thing, with a 40-minute limit.
second the upgrading of JAWS14 may fix it.
You do not need to go thru all the hassel of uninstalling only to reinstall an upgraded version.
When you start jaws, doesn't it come up telling you have an update?
If not, go to the help menu, and hit enter on "Check for updates." if you use up arrow once when you get to your help menu, that'll put you right there.
jaws will tell you to wait while it checks for updates. dont close the window.
When the update checking is completed, jaws will say "The folowing updates are available." the first one will always be the newest jaws 14 build number.
for example it'll say list box Jaws14.0.3005, checkbox not checked, telling you the size of the update.
hit space to check this box.
if you want to download any other training miterials, feel free to go down the list checking the other boxes. You dont have to do this, its all optional.
Once you've selected all of the updates you want, tab to install, or hit alt+i to start the downloading process.
For the newest jaws build ,, it'll say something like downloading jaws patch, please wait. you'll hear clicks as the progress goes along and percentages telling you how far along the download is.
once its all downloaded, it'll say installing jaws patch. again, you'll hear clicks and percentages telling you how far along it is in installing the patch.
once it is completed, it'll say something telling you the update is complete and probably ask you to reboot, be sure to do so. when you reboot, everything should work fine.
I should point out, its called an update, not upgrade. an upgrade is when you go from one jaws version to the next (JAWS 13 to 14 for example.) an update is the little build numbers that fixes minor things but keeps the same version.
Thanks for all your help.

Your welcome. if you stil have problems, feel free to post.
so, guys, sorry if this doesn't really mesh with the old topic but I didn't want to start a new one for this...
I just got a new computer and am now using windows 7 along with jaws 14. I'm loving it accept for one thing: when I try to install a program my jaws stops reading anything and when I hit escape to exit out, it goes back to working just fine. I don't think this is just for installing things though just where I've mainly knowticed it because I'm trying to put all my programs that I need on my new computer. it also happens when i click check for updates in the jaws help menu, and a few other places so I feel like it might be dialog boxes that I am having issues with? Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this problem?
Thanks,
Daniel
Actually Jaws is still talking you just need to wait.
The User Account protection is working and has to come up.
This can be turned off, but I'd not. You can learn to work it.
When your computer stops talking, wait and you'll hear a sound, like a chime or whatever, pretty soon Jaws will talk or you hit the tab key and select yes.
You can also hit Alt Y I think, but I'll post that again if I'm wrong to answer the question.
In fact I'll post, because I don't think that is correct, but anyway, that is why Jaws stops.
Okay, the key stroke is Alt Y.
If you really have to so you can get all your programs installed here is how you turn it off.
You have on the start something called getting started. Go there and click on change user account control settings.
If not just type that in the search box.
When you get there you'll see how to set it to 0. The computer needs to be restarted.
When you get finished, I suggest turning it back on, and setting the level back to the 66% place.
If your issue continues reinstall Jaws, but I think once you learn how to locate it you'll not have a problem.
Remember when installing programs to wait. Depending on how powerful the system is, before you hear that chime might take a few minutes or not.
Flexible Web takes a bit of getting used to, but it works really well once you get the hang of it. I think the problem with it is that it probably was not worth half the time FS put into developing it. I almost never use it in spite of knowing very well how it works, but that is just me. I do think it is a good idea, but I myself have figured out the nooks and crannies of the Web pages I frequent, and for the others, well I don't want to skip over stuff on an unknown page as the skipped frames, for instance, may be a very important part of that page.
ok i dont use 7, but what is user account protection wayne?
It is an alert system.
When ever a program tries to install Windows ask you if you want to allow it. This can save you from installing things that sneak in with programs, or on websites.
It can keep you from installing a rogue program you don't know is trying to install on your computer.
When it comes up it gives you the option to see what the program is before you allow it.
is that kinda like the thing on XP that asks you if you wanna run this file and says the name of the publisher?
No. Even after you select run the dialogue comes up.
Sometimes a program, even legit ones come with several things piggy backing them, so each one is caught.
It will also catch programs that try to install from other downloads.
so say you download something from softtedia. it'd catch the antivirus or toolbar thing. ware as in XP you'd have to click custem in order to see that it was gonna install those things.
See, one reason Windows 7 can work for you! Lol
actually, i know it'll work on my laptop. its the sound cards on the desktop that MS says it wont work with from what i remember.
So have both? Smile.
Thanks guys, for some reason after I restarted my system earlier today, the Acount thingymabob came up in a snap. I'm not sure why it wasn't doing it yesterday, but I'm glad it's working now.
If your machine is new it had to load lots of updates. This sometimes requires a restart and you can't install stuff until it finishes.
If it is all done you're good to go now.
that might be an optin wayne.b
No, you won't see, but....
ok so guys, I know I said my problem was gone but it doesn't seem so...it's still happening but what I've knowticed, is that I can kinda read the uac dialog if the sensitivity is set to 33 instead of 66, The problem being is that I can't see the name of the program that's trying to install or make changes...any ideas?
If you tab you will find a box that says more information. You might athat point need to turn on the Jaws cursor to read about it. I'll give that a test.
33% is okay, but I like 66 better.
Okay, so I hate to suggest this, but if you don't download much, or when you download you save, scan before you run a program, and you keep your virous protecting updated religiously, you can get by without.
This is available, and it is a good thing, but if you just have to hate it?
Also, if you decide to do with out, get a good paid protection, not a freebie.
FS has actually suggested before that disabling UAC is a good thing, at lest that's what I've read and I kind of have to agree with them in some ways. not all, but some.
for someone who doesn't use 7 and is curious, what do the different percentage sliders mean within this dialog?
why does FS suggest turning it off?
FS, because for some it is hard to use and also on low powered computers with Jaws.
The different % means how much protection, or how many warning or the level of warning.
Programs are classified as medium, major, or low risk.
oh ok now i see. Thanks wayne.
